Anneke died at the Belmont Long Term Care in Belleville in her 98 th year. She
was the fourth of six children born to Dominee Allert Chrisstoffels and Emilia
Rijnsaardt. Predeceased by her brothers Nico and Jan, sister Didi and ex husbands
Hans Schmidt (Georgia, USA) and Don Hayes of Hamilton. Anneke is survived by
sons Erik Schmidt of Edmonton, Werner Schmidt of Tottenham and René Schmidt
(Shirley) of Trenton, her brother Allert in New Zealand and sister Emy in The
Netherlands. “Oma” will be remembered by grandsons Adrian, Ryder, Nathan and
Daniel and friends in Gilman, Illinois, Simcoe, Ancaster and Belleville.
Anneke was born in Padang, Indonesia and the family returned to The
Netherlands just before WWII. She met Hans Schmidt after the war and they
married in 1949 and emigrated to Canada in 1957. Our parents worked hard to
improve their lot. Anneke taught Home Economics at Trenton High School, Pickering
High School and Dunbarton High School in the early 1960’s. In 1983 she enrolled at
York University to earn a B.A. and moved to Chicago to study for a Master of Divinity
degree. She was ordained a United Church of Christ Pastor in Gilman, Illinois in
1991. After retirement Anneke (or Annette) lived in Simcoe and Ancaster and since
2013 at the Belmont Long Term Care home in Belleville. Many thanks to Janet and
the extraordinarily caring and patient staff in Green Acres at the Belmont LTC.
A memorial service for Annette Chrisstoffels will be held at Beaches Presbyterian Church 65 Glen Manor Drive, in Toronto, on Saturday June the 3rd, 2023 at 10:00 am. Rev. Frank Hamper (retired) will officiate. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories of Annette, followed by a luncheon hosted by the Schmidt family. Contact Rene Schmidt through the Rushnell funeral home (or to his email) if you plan to attend.
